Why Can Some Neon Pink & Orange Gel Polishes Develop a Blue Shadow?
From time to time, we receive enquiries from nail technicians regarding a temporary blue shadow or slight blue discoloration that may appear on certain neon pink and orange gel polish shades after curing. We understand this can be concerning, so we'd like to explain why it happens.
Why does this happen?
Neon pinks and oranges are well known within the nail industry for being among the most challenging colours to formulate. This is due to the fluorescent pigments used to achieve their vibrant appearance. These pigments are naturally less stable than those used in standard gel polish colours.
Many cosmetic manufacturers use certain stabilising chemicals to minimise colour shifting.
Although these stabilisers perform exceptionally well, certain environmental factors can occasionally cause a temporary blue shadow or discolouration in some neon shades.
The good news
In most cases, the blue shadow is temporary.
As the gel polish completes its post-curing process and the pigments stabilise, the colour will generally return to its intended shade. This process can take anywhere from a few hours to approximately 48 hours.
Environmental factors that may contribute
Certain external factors can influence the appearance of fluorescent pigments during the first 24–48 hours after application, including:
- Exposure to direct sunlight or prolonged UV light.
- Alcohol-based hand sanitisers.
- Cleaning chemicals such as bleach, chlorine or ammonia.
- Hair colouring products.
- Self-tanning products.
- Skincare products containing acids or benzoyl peroxide.
These factors do not necessarily damage the gel polish but may temporarily affect how the fluorescent pigments reflect light.
Curing recommendations
To achieve the best results, we recommend curing these neon shades for 30–60 seconds using a compatible LED/UV lamp. Excessive curing times may increase the likelihood of colour shifting, as fluorescent pigments are more sensitive to prolonged UV exposure than standard gel polish colours.
Lamp temperature can make a difference
You may also notice that this phenomenon is less common with clients who have appointments earlier in the day compared to those seen later in the afternoon.
As a curing lamp is used continuously throughout the day, it naturally becomes warmer. This increase in operating temperature, combined with repeated exposure to high-intensity light, can influence the behavior of fluorescent pigments and may contribute to temporary colour shifting in highly pigmented neon shades.
